Lucia celebration at Hull Minster

Sunday, 12 December
6.30pm – 7.30pm
Hull Minster
10a-11 King Street

Kingston upon Hull HU1 2JJ

Saint Lucia’s Day is celebrated most commonly in Scandinavia, with their long dark winters, where it is a major feast day.

Saint Lucia is called Sankta Lucia in Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish, she is represented as a lady in a white dress with a crown or wreath of candles on her head. In Scandinavia, girls dressed as Saint Lucia carry candles in procession as songs are sung, which symbolizes bringing the light of Christianity throughout world darkness.

The event will begin with a procession where choir members carry candlelight into the church singing the Lucia song in the Scandinavian language. This will be followed by a selection of Christmas songs and text readings related to Saint Lucia and Christmas.

Falling within the Advent season, Saint Lucia’s Day is these days viewed as an event signalling the arrival of Christmastide, pointing to the arrival of the Light of Christ in the calendar, on Christmas Day. In cooperation with Hull Minster, the Danish Church, and Nordic Chambers and organisations in and around the Humber we are pleased to invite you, your family, and friends to this great event – all are welcome including children.
