Finland is the world’s happiest country

Good news from Finland!

Finland has once again ranked as the world’s happiest country according to the World Happiness Report, which is an independent survey sponsored by the United Nations. Denmark, Norway, and Sweden also scored in the top ten according to the report. (Yle 2021) Finland has kept the top slot for four years running, and this year’s results are especially impressive considering the ongoing situation with the pandemic.

The survey takes into account measures such as GDP, freedom, social support, and levels of corruption. This year, the main theme centered around the impact of Covid-19 on the wellbeing of individuals and how the governments of countries have dealt with the situation. The report uses data from over 149 countries that were gathered between 2018-2020 by Gallup World Poll Surveys. (CNN 2021; The World Happiness Report 2021)

Heikki Väänänen shared his thoughts on the reasons why Finland has received the top score for consecutive years in his Forbes article. Väänänen mentioned factors such as the flat working model, high-quality education, the fight against inequality, and the Finnish grit aka “sisu” among few reasons why Finland continues to score well. (Väänänen 2021)
